Parable of the Sower – Sunday 12th July

Parable of the Sower – Sunday 12th July

What’s today about?

What do you need to listen to? Instructions? How to play a game? Your parents/carers? Teachers?

How well do we listen?

Sometimes it is hard to listen, Sometimes we can forget, sometimes we can get distracted. When we listen to good advice and people tell us how to keep safe or enjoy something it helps us and others as well. When we listen to someone it shows love to them.

In our story today we hear Jesus talk about listening well to what he teaches, maybe think about some lessons Jesus taught? The big lesson Jesus taught is to love God and to love others. If you listen and do what Jesus teaches you, you will grow strong in faith but beware of getting lost or distracted on the way!

We’re going to hear from the Bible, pray, explore what it means to us, and have a song as well.

Hearing from the bible!

Let’s listen to this bible story:

You can find that story in the bible in: Matthew 13. 1-23

Questions? Choose one of the following questions.

What parts of the story were your favourites?

What were the most important parts?

What was the good ground?

What type of ground do you think God wants us to be?

What do you think God wants us to grow up to be like?

Let’s Pray, Let’s talk to God.

Need

  • Paper
  • Pen, pencil or crayon
  • Scissors

What to do:

Draw a leaf shape on your paper and write on it: God help me listen and grow.

Write or draw a prayer on your leaf asking for help to listen to what God wants us to to and do it.  (you can also ask, thank or give love to God in this section)

Pray: Jesus the sower whatever I am today, whatever the mix of path, rock, thorns or soil help me to become good ground for you, for your teaching and for your presence.

Responding to the story:

Have a go at the activity to help think about the story:

Craft – Flowers

Think:

We are going to make flowers. Nice, healthy and beautiful flowers like in the story. We can think about how nice flowers are. They are usually quite nice from blowing dandelions, smelling nice to looking nice. Jesus asks us to be a bit like a flower nice to be around and good for others and ourselves. We can do this when we follow Jesus and listen to what he says. And do what God would want us to do: Love God and Love others following what Jesus says.

How can you grow well following Jesus? Maybe talking about faith? Praying? Or reading the bible?

Things you Need:

  • coloured paper
  • bendable drinking straws
  • an egg carton (optional, you can use a cup or similar to put the flowers in)
  • scissors (parental help)
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • sticky tape

Game – seeds and chopsticks

Think:

Knowing what the right thing to do can be tricky! We need to be carful to do what is right and listen to good advice and people. Listening and talking to God can help us do the right thing and be good soil. Following what Jesus says we should Love God and Love others .

Play this game and think while you concentrate about how you can focus on the right thing to do!

Things Needed for the game:

  • Chopsticks or two pens/pencils. You can use tongs or a spoon if they are a little difficult to use.
  • Two cups or bowls
  • Seeds, nuts or beads. (you can use anything small that you can pick up with your “chopsticks”

What to do:

  • Put your seeds in one cup
  • Using your chopsticks see how fast you can move the seeds from one cup to the others.
  • If there are two or more of you time yourself and see who is the fastest.
