Online Sunday school – The Lost Sheep

Online Sunday school – The Lost Sheep

What’s today about?

Have you ever been lost? How did it feel?

Our story today was told by Jesus about a lost sheep and a Shepherd going looking for it. God is a little bit like the Shepherd look for lost sheep. Being a Christian (following Jesus) is not about how good you are but knowing God finds us and loves us no matter where we are.

We’re going to hear from the Bible, pray, explore what it means to us, and have a song as well.

Hearing from the bible!

Let’s listen to this bible story:

You can find that story in the bible in: Matthew 18:12–14

Questions? Choose one of the following questions.

What parts of the story were your favourites?

What were the most important parts?

What helps you do something new?

If you where a sheep how would you feel if the Shepherd left you to find your lost friend?

Let’s Pray – Labyrinth

Need

  • Picture of the labyrinth
  • Optional pens or pencils

What to do:

The Shepard had to go on a long journey to find his lost sheep tackling difficult problems along the way. God comes and finds us when we feel lost. God comes to find us even when we do not know him.

With your finger or a pen or pencil trace your way into the centre of the labyrinth let your thoughts wander or think about how God loves us enough to help us when we are stuck. Maybe talk to God about what you are thinking, like you would talk to a friend. When you get into the centre pause for a moment before tracing your way out. You can talk to someone about what you prayed after if you want.

Responding to the story:

Have a go at the activity to help think about the story:

Craft – Toilet Roll Sheep

Think:

Do you think the sheep was scared? How do you think the sheep felt throughout the story? When it got lost? Stuck? Or came home?

You can make a sheep to remind us that God finds people and loves them like the Shepherd finding his lost sheep.

Things Needed:

  • Empty Toilet roll
  • Cotton wool (if you don’t have you have use rolled up toilet paper)
  • Card for the legs and face (any colour but sheep are usually black or brown)
  • Scissors
  • Glue

What to do:

Cut out four legs and a circle head just bigger than end of the roll

Glue on the cotton wool (or tissue paper) to the outside of the toilet roll

Draw a face on the head you cut out.

Glue the legs and head on.

Game – Scavenger hunt

Think:

Have you ever lost something? What did it feel like to find it?

The Shepard must have been really excited to the lost sheep.

We are going to play a scavenger hunt game where you need to find items from around your home. Like the Shepherd in our story. God searches for us and loves it when people come and follow him and find faith in Jesus. How do you feel knowing good looks out for us even when we are lost?

Things Needed for the game:

  • Items list
  • Timer

What to do:

See how fast you can find the items on this list if you can find someone to play with then race them to find them.

  • Coffee mug
  • Blanket
  • Toy
  • Plant
  • Physical Bible
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Toilet Paper
  • A spoon
  • A pet or cuddly toy
  • A baby/younger sibling
  • A tablet/ mobile phone

Song idea:

Shine Jesus shine – It’s a classic!
