Online Sunday school – Be still – 19th June

What’s today about?

Have you ever been worried? What made you feel better?

In today’s story Jesus’ friends were worried! Really worried, even afraid! They were out in their boat when a huge storm came across the sea. They thought they would die! BUT Jesus calmed the storm and they calmed down as well.

We can be worried and afraid sometimes, maybe you’re worried to go back to school? Or to do something new? Jesus is with us like He was with His friends and although things are maybe going on outside, He can help calm what’s inside us. Sometimes when it feels like there is a storm inside us Jesus can even help calm that too.

We’re going to hear from the Bible, pray, explore what it means to us, and have a song as well.

Hearing from the bible!

Let’s listen to this bible story:

You can find that story in the Bible in: Matthew 8 or Luke 8

How would you react in a storm? Have you ever been caught in a storm?

What worries can you let Jesus know about?

Let’s Pray – Boats

We will make some paper boats to ask Jesus to help us with the worries, fears and things that make us scared in our lives

  • Paper
  • Pens
  • Bowl of water

What to do:

You can pray together at the end or use your own words too:

Jesus who calms the storms help me when I am worried and afraid to calm the storms inside me. Amen

Responding to the story

Have a go at the activity to help think about the story:

Craft – Storm jars

What helps you stay calm? Jesus’ friends were caught in a fierce storm. Sometimes we can feel like it too on the inside, but it can help to take time to stop and focus on something else. It can help to pray and ask God for help as well.

Make a storm jar/bottle. Shake the bottle up and watch it settle like when Jesus calmed the storm. Ask God to be with you like Jesus was in the storm, when you feel worried, anxious or scared. If you feel like that as well, you may like to look at the jar to help you relax.

There are a couple of ways to make a storm jar here are three:

Need for sand storm bottle:

  • Empty plastic Bottle or jar
  • Water
  • Sand

Fill the bottle/Jar 3/4 of the way full then top up with sand. Add the lid then shake and watch it settle.

Need for Glitter storm bottle:

  • Empty plastic Bottle or jar
  • Hot Water
  • Glitter and PVA glue or glitter glue

Add a healthy dollop of glitter glue or a dollop of glue with glitter added.

Fill the bottle or jar with hot not boiling water (get an adult to help)

Wait until it cools then screw the lid on tightly and shake and watch it settle.

What to do:

Need for oil storm bottle:

  • Empty plastic Bottle or jar
  • Water
  • Oil, Vegetable or baby
  • Blue food colouring (or any colour you have)
  • Glitter (optional)

What to do:

Add all the ingredients to the bottle/jar in this order: blue food colouring, glitter, oil. Add the lid. Shake up and watch it settle!
