Good Friday For Families

Good Friday For Families

Introduction

Today is Good Friday.

It’s a time to remember Jesus death on the cross.

So why is it “good” if it is about Jesus’ death?

It’s because we remember that Jesus loved the world so much he died on the cross to beat death and lead us to life forevermore.

We will follow Jesus to the cross through his story and reflect on the story through different activities and prayers.

Things you will need before you start

  • A light source
  • Bread
  • Juice or water
  • A Hug
  • A bowl of water or a sink.
  • Soap
  • Towel
  • Something heavy
  • A piece of paper per person. Any A4 paper will do.
  • Pen and ruler (if you want to be super accurate)
  • Scissors (incase ripping is hard)

As we being you will need:

  • A light source this could be a candle, Fairy lights, lamp

We turn on the light and pray:

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Video

Watch this video of read the story its the same one we will have on Sunday:

You can also find it in the Bible at:

Matthew 27:11-54

Stations

You can choose as many of these stations as you would like to do or are able. We follow Jesus every step to the cross. Starting with the last supper.

Station 1 – The last supper

Need:

  • Bread
  • juice or water

Think:

Jesus had a meal with his friends it was a special meal where the Jews remember being rescued from slavery in Egypt. Judas had run away to betray Jesus who turned to his disciples and said ‘I will never forget you,’ he said to his friends. ‘And I don’t want you to forget me either.’ Then he broke the bread in half and passed it round. ‘This is my body,’ he said. ‘I give it up for you. Take it and eat it and remember me.’ Then he took a cup of wine and said a thank-you prayer for that as well. ‘This is my blood,’ he said. ‘God will use it to wash away all the bad things anyone has ever done. Take it and drink it and remember me.’*

Taste the bread and juice think about how it must have felt with Jesus saying the words he said. And have one last meal with him. Who would you chose to have a meal with right now?

Pray

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Station 2 – In the garden

Need:

A Hug.

Think:

Jesus moved to the garden of Gethsemane with his friends, where he prayed, all his friends fell asleep and he felt very very lonely.

Have you ever felt lonely? When things are closed and we need to stay home we can feel like are on our own like Jesus. Jesus knows what it is like to be lonely and id always there to comfort us.

Give someone a big hug while you think!

Pray

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Station 3 – Jesus is on trial

Need:

  • A bowl of water or a sink.
  • Soap
  • Towel

Think:

Jesus was arrested and betrayed by Judas in the garden and put on trial although he was innocent. The religious leaders wanted him dead and gone. He was taken to the roman leader Pilot who did not want upset the crowd that wanted to kill Jesus so he washed his hands of the matter meaning he let them have their way and was not to blame for what happened next.

Sometimes it can seem like not doing the right thing is easier maybe than telling the truth or helping others.

Its really important to wash your hands!  Wash your hands now and think of a time you did the right thing unlike Pilot.

Pray

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Station 4 – Simon helps Jesus carry the cross

Need:

Something heavy could be a book, wood or a big rock

Think:

They made Jesus carry a heavy cross out of the city to the top of a hill he was tired and kept falling. Simon was dragged out of the crowd to help carry the cross for Jesus Simon picked up the cross and carried it for Jesus.

See how long you can hold the heavy object.

How could you help people who are struggling? While we are in isolation maybe you could call or write a letter to someone who is in need.

Pray

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Station 5 – The cross

Need:

  • A piece of paper per person. Any A4 paper will do.
  • Pen and ruler (if you want to be super accurate)
  • Scissors (incase ripping is hard)

Making the  cross follow the Link and video bellow on how to make:

https://www.sundayschoolkids.com/activities-lent-easter/1-magic-cross-instru.htm

Think

Jesus was nailed to the cross. People made fun of him and gambled for his clothes. A robber on the cross to his side asks for forgiveness and it is found.  It is all done when Jesus says it is finished and he dies. He dies to beat death and take away all the things we have done wrong. But that is not the end…….

Write or draw on the cross what we are sorry for and ask for Gods forgiveness and love.

Pray

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.

Closing

Say this prayer together:

Step by step we go to the cross of Jesus that showed Gods love to all.  Help us be close to you and follow you in all we do.  Keep us safe from harm and in your love forever.  Amen

Blow out or Turn off your Light.
